Where will the project begin? The project is being built in phases which are determined through the planning process that the team is currently conducting. The first project area has been selected and planning for this area is under way.
When will the project begin? The first housing units are expected to begin construction in 2006. the final phase of this redevelopment is expected to conclude by 2016.
What about the existing community? Many efforts are underway to help preserve the stable housing that exists with rehabilitation and home repair funds. The City of Detroit has committed funds to assist with this effort. The partnership will begin to raise additional capital to match the City’s funding to provide targeted resources for those that do not meet the City’s qualifications. Relocation opportunities will be available to those households that express interest.
Will there be any jobs or other economic opportunities available? Yes, as the project moves closer to the actual construction activity, opportunities to apply for training and construction jobs will be announced. We expect that most of the construction jobs will be provided by the sub-contractors that are contracted to build the housing. The partnership office will serve as a referral source for the training and job openings and will post all information at the project headquarters.
What about other neighborhood needs aside from housing? The master Development Team is in contact with many of the persons and organizations responsible for the non-housing need of a community. The non-housing needs have been identified as schools, recreation, green space, parks, police, fire, retail, commercial, infrastructure etc. Discussions have begun to influence positive changes in these areas.
